SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated on Monday that he will give each child in the United States a share of his company's stock next year.
According to documents submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August ( SEC ), Musk currently holds approximately 4.8 billion shares of SpaceX stock. If unvested bonuses and stock options are included, this number rises to 6.4 billion shares, representing a 48.4% actual stake in the company for him.
As of July 1, 2025, there are 72 million children under the age of 18 in the United States, according to official census data.
Calculated based on the closing price of $146.03 last Friday as indicated by SpaceX, this means that the CEO will be giving away shares worth approximately $10.5 billion.
In a post on X, Musk said, "This will be the first of many measures." He did not provide any further details on how this stock grant will be implemented.
CNBC has contacted SpaceX to seek further comments.
Musk's remarks follow the disclosure by Anthropic that he plans to invest 5% of his shares in a new public interest fund; as the company's valuation rises, this shareholding ratio may also increase.
In response to a post on X by Anthropic about the fund on Sunday, Musk replied, "I suggest distributing the shares directly to the public," and added that this is exactly what he would do.
Subject to the approval of shareholders, the fund of Anthropic will immediately commit to holding 5% of the company's shares; the board of directors may also decide to additionaly hold 2% of the shares for every 50% increase in the company's value above a certain undisclosed benchmark.
The fund can be used for “exploring large-scale donations,” including contributions to traditional non-profit organizations, or as direct distributions to specific groups. It can also be utilized to adopt “more daring approaches” to study and address the impact and displacement of artificial intelligence on employment, Anthropic.
