Elon Musk stated that he will give each child in the United States one share of SpaceX in 2027. At the current price of $146 per share, this gift will be worth over $10 billion. Based on Musk's current net worth of about $1 trillion, this is approximately equivalent to 1% of his wealth.
However, Musk has not yet explained how exactly he will proceed. In another post, he stated that he hopes to “give these shares directly to the public” and referred to them as “the first batch” of shares he will donate.
U.S. President Donald Trump once received support of about $300 million from Elon Musk to help him win the election. Trump has established a bank account for children through the Treasury Department, named the "Trump Account," which can accept stock donations from wealthy donors.
Elon Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Just a few hours before Musk posted, Anthropic had just promised to invest 5% of their shares in a new “public interest fund.” This fund is planned to be used to make large donations to “traditional non-profit organizations” or to distribute funds directly to specific groups of people after the upcoming IPO.
On Sunday afternoon, Musk directly replied to a post by Anthropic about the fund on X, suggesting that the company should distribute it “directly to the public.”
"That's exactly what I plan to do," he wrote in another reply four hours later. Subsequently, that same night, he announced his plan to donate SpaceX shares.
According to data from the Interdepartmental Forum on Children and Families Statistics in the United States, there are currently over 70 million children under the age of 18 in the country. Musk holds approximately 849 million shares of SpaceX A class common stock, as well as over 5.5 billion shares of Class B super-voting rights stock. He may acquire even more shares in the future.
As of now, Musk's charitable donations are almost entirely made through his own Musk Foundation. Despite his negative views on philanthropy, this foundation remains the fifth-largest private charity in the United States. A recent review by The Economist revealed that over the years, most of the funds distributed by the Musk Foundation have gone to entities associated with Musk. Nearly 60% of these funds have been directed to another charity organization named The Foundation, which is operated by his wealth manager, Jared Birchall.
