Beidao Credit Cooperative ( North Island Credit Union ) joined credit cooperatives around the world to celebrate International Credit Cooperatives Day, and held a special event at its headquarters in San Diego. Local credit cooperative leaders, community partners, and members were invited to attend in order to commemorate the ongoing impact of the cooperative finance movement.
International Cooperative Day is held on the third Thursday of October each year to recognize the contributions made by cooperatives to the financial well-being of members and communities around the world. This year marks the 78th anniversary of this commemorative day, with the theme “Cooperative Finance : A Steady Signal in a Noisy World”, emphasizing that cooperatives remain distinct in an increasingly complex financial environment due to their values of trust, stability, and a people-oriented approach.
North Island Credit Union President and CEO Steve O ' Connell stated: "International Credit Union Day is a great opportunity to bring together those who are committed to helping members build a more stable financial future and to strengthening the communities we serve. In a world where people face more choices, more information, and more competing voices than ever before, credit unions remain focused on relationships, trust, and a clear sense of mission. Even as the ways we serve our members continue to evolve, these values continue to guide us."
During the celebration, a representative from the office of California Senator Catherine Blakespear (Democrat, District 38) read out a proclamation acknowledging the contributions of credit cooperatives to the San Diego community. Wheelhouse Credit Union also participated in this event.
There are over 67,000 credit cooperatives worldwide, serving approximately 400 million members in more than 100 countries. As non-profit financial cooperative organizations, credit cooperatives provide a wide range of financial services to their members, while also supporting the financial well-being of the communities they serve and promoting positive economic and social change.
International Credit Cooperatives Day is organized by the World Council of Credit Unions ( World Council of Credit Unions ), an international industry association and development platform for credit unions and other financial cooperative organizations. It is co-hosted with national credit union associations and federations around the world.
