Microsoft stated on Monday that it is offering buyout packages to a large number of its employees who wish to leave the company.
The software company announced the launch of a new voluntary resignation program for certain employees in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom, applicable to those with 70 years of experience or less.
A person familiar with the matter said that about 60,000 people meet the qualifications. This individual requested to remain anonymous as they are discussing internal affairs.
Microsoft has been increasing its spending on data centers to meet the high demands brought about by artificial intelligence, and provides cloud services to Anthropic, OpenAI, as well as many other companies. This has put pressure on Microsoft's finances. In April, Microsoft announced its first voluntary retirement program, which was eligible for approximately 7% of its American employees.
Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Amy Coleman wrote in a memo to employees: "The voluntary resignation program reflects an important part of our approach to evolving as we respond to changes: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, providing employees with more options to plan for the next phase of their careers." She also stated, "This is built on the experience we gained earlier this year through our voluntary retirement program."
