Michael Burry: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac stocks may become worthless
2026-10-12 06:24:59
According to CoinMeta, renowned investor Michael Burry ( Michael Burry ) stated that the stock charts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac indicate that their values could potentially drop to zero. Burry mentioned in his weekend communication that the stocks of these two mortgage giants had seen a significant rise after Trump's election in 2024, but they have now fallen back to near historical lows. The stock of Fannie Mae closed at $1.39 on Election Day 2024, having reached a high of $15.31, and has now dropped to $4.04, representing a 74% decline from its peak. Freddie Mac has shown a similar pattern, with its stock rising from $1.20 to $14.15 before falling back to $3.68. Burry pointed out that these two stocks have formed a head-and-shoulders top pattern, which indicates the end of an upward trend. He expects that ordinary shareholders may face a risk of losing up to 90% of their investment, as the preferred shares held by the Treasury Department take precedence over ordinary shareholders in repayment.
