AI Pioneers and 400 Scientists Call for Cutting Off Internet Connections to the AI Model

According to CoinMeta, over 400 scientists, including Geoffrey Hinton who is referred to as the "godfather" of this field and 2018 Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, have called for the most dangerous AI models to be disconnected from the internet. In an open letter released on Tuesday, they requested that AI laboratories implement a default "air isolation" for these network-capable models, which means physically disconnecting them from any external networks. The letter states that in the short term, strong sandbox mechanisms, including air isolation, should be used to provide high-level control over these network-capable AI models. As of Wednesday, the letter had garnered 450 signatures, including those of Stuart Russell from the University of California, Berkeley, and Ron Rivest, who co-invented the RSA encryption system. The letter mentions that "network-capable models" refer to those that can autonomously discover and exploit software vulnerabilities. Laboratories measure these capabilities within sandboxes, which are enclosed digital environments where AI can attack virtual targets without touching anything real.
