KOSPI tumbles 7% due to the sell-off of AI chips

CoinMeta data: The KOSPI index tumbled 7% due to intensified global selling of AI chips, triggering a trading suspension and resulting in billions of losses for the South Korean stock market. On Thursday, the KOSPI index suffered another heavy blow, reaching its lowest point since the end of July, with seven consecutive trading days of declines, marking the longest downward trend since 2024. Although it is still expected to rise by about 30% in 2026, the index has already fallen by approximately 39% from its historical high in June. Due to the significant weight of semiconductor companies in the stock market, South Korea is particularly vulnerable during the latest tech sell-off. The stock price of Samsung Electronics fell by 9%, and SK Hynix fell by 11%. Foreign investors sold about 2.9 trillion Korean won (about $2.15 billion) worth of South Korean stocks on that trading day, exacerbating market pressure. Investors are concerned about the future returns of AI investments, especially against the backdrop of inflation in the United States exceeding expectations, which has increased the market's expectation that interest rates may remain high or continue to rise.
