Swedish Central Bank suggests parliament initiate legislative preparations for the digital krona
2026-10-16 01:02:29
According to CoinMeta, the Swedish Central Bank recommends that parliament prepare relevant legislation for the introduction of a digital krona, citing reasons such as the European Central Bank's advancement of the digital euro and the increasing use of foreign currency stablecoins. In a letter to the parliamentary finance committee on October 7th, the Swedish Central Bank stated that the European Central Bank plans to launch a pilot project for the digital euro in 2027 and may introduce it to the public in 2029. The bank pointed out that the lack of a digital version of the national currency in the payment system could affect competitiveness. Foreign currency stablecoins, such as those pegged to the US dollar, are widely used for payments in Sweden, putting pressure on the use of the Swedish krona. The Swedish Central Bank estimates that it will take at least five years to introduce a digital krona, without including the time required for legislative changes.
