Schneider Electric announced new power solutions at the YOTTA 2026 (September 28-30) held in Las Vegas on Monday, aimed at accelerating the deployment and expansion of AI ready data centers. These solutions cover medium-voltage distribution and high-density power infrastructure, enabling electrical systems to evolve in sync with the AI factories and digital services they support. At the heart of this release is the world's first fully software-defined medium-voltage switchgear, which is already in actual operation in a co-located data center in collaboration with Equinix.
Edé ric, Executive Vice President of Energy Management at Schneider Electric, stated: "Today, data center operators are faced with not only the challenge of keeping up with the rapid growth, but also with building a resilient, highly efficient, and scalable power infrastructure for an increasingly digital world. Schneider Electric's software-defined medium-voltage architecture brings a higher level of flexibility, standardization, and energy intelligence to power distribution, helping customers to expand their businesses more efficiently while preparing for future needs. By combining software, connectivity, and sustainable innovation, we are empowering the next generation of more resilient and efficient data centers."
Software-Defined Medium Voltage: Establishing a New Category for Power Infrastructure
Based on a broader vision of software-defined energy, Schneider Electric is extending software-defined architecture to medium-voltage power infrastructure. This approach decouples system intelligence from physical hardware, establishing a new model for designing, deploying, and operating electrical infrastructure, enabling it to evolve in sync with the supported AI factories and digital services.
According to the comparison recorded in Schneider Electric's white paper 303, this method can increase the ordering and manufacturing speed by up to three times compared to traditional custom-made medium-voltage switchgear, and the on-site debugging and acceptance testing speed by up to two times. This solution also reduces system complexity: in a comparison of 20 panels, software-defined configuration reduces the use of wires by 87%, the number of terminals by 91%, and the amount of copper material by 85% in control wiring, while providing digital connection and analysis capabilities to enhance operational visibility.
The key elements of a software-defined medium-voltage architecture include:
- Standardized, configurable infrastructure:Replace highly customized, custom-engineered systems with modular and standardizable hardware, thereby enabling faster delivery.
- Software-enabled features:Transfer some capabilities from hardware to software, allowing customers to add new features and performance improvements without the need for physical modifications.
- Digital priority deployment:Standardized modules, automated testing, and an intuitive interface help to simplify ordering, manufacturing, debugging, and on-site acceptance.
- Full Lifecycle Flexibility:In-air updates allow for system upgrades without the need to replace hardware or shut down the system, while software-enabled features support continuous optimization. Predictive maintenance driven by the AI driver is achieved through EcoCare Services.
Schneider Electric stated that this software-defined medium-voltage solution has been put into actual operation through pilots with Equinix in a co-located data center environment.
The company stated that the pilot project will continue until 2027, and broader availability is expected to be launched in 2028. RM AirSeT 38 Software Defined Expand the 6 kV medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear to 38 kV
Schneider Electric also announced the launch of RM AirSeT ™ 38 Software Defined, which is part of its mature AirSeT ™ platform and belongs to the secondary medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) without SF₆. RM AirSeT 38 extends this platform from 24 kV to 38 kV, and is specifically designed for the next generation of AI data centers.
With the advancement of AI, high-performance computing, and large-scale digital infrastructure driving up power density, many operators are planning 36/38 kV medium-voltage architectures to support higher power supply capabilities, simplify the design of medium-voltage backbone networks, and enable scalable campus deployments. RM AirSeT 38 is designed to meet this demand, providing greater flexibility for ultra-large cloud service providers and co-located service providers in their modernization of power distribution strategies.
RM AirSeT 38 supports high-density, scalable deployment in the following ways:
- None SF ₆ Technology:Using pressurized pure air insulation and vacuum arc extinguishing technology to replace SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride, a potent greenhouse gas), fluorine-containing gases, or proprietary mixed gases.
- Compact GIS Design:Supports installation in limited spaces and high densities, while achieving a standardized and repeatable medium-voltage architecture in data center deployments.
- Software-Defined Capabilities:A standardized digital architecture is designed to simplify configuration, speed up debugging, and support evolution throughout the entire lifecycle.
- Operational visibility:Digital monitoring and sensing options provide system performance visualization and can be configured according to the customer's cybersecurity requirements.
The company plans to start accepting orders in 2027, with the first batch of deliveries expected in 2028. If you wish to receive updates regarding RM AirSeT 38, you may register your interest.
Galaxy VXL brings high-density UPS power to the data center prepared for AI.
Schneider Electric also highlighted Galaxy VXL, which is its latest high-density, modular uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed for the next generation of AI ready data centers and large-scale digital infrastructure. Galaxy VXL is specifically engineered to meet the power requirements of AI workloads, combining industry-leading power density, operational efficiency, and resilience in an ultra-compact form factor.
As the deployment of AI promotes increased rack density and more dynamic load curves, data center operators need to be able to quickly respond to fluctuating demands while maximizing the power infrastructure of their spare capacity.
