Ethereum completed an atomic transaction test connecting the mainnet to the layer-two network under the Ethereum Economic Zone ( EEZ ) framework, involving 0.001 ETH. This framework is designed to allow connected rollup to invoke Ethereum contracts within a single transaction without the need for a separate bridge; however, the project is still in the development stage and has not yet been audited.

Under the Ethereum Economic Zone ( EEZ ) framework, Ethereum has conducted an atomic transaction test that connected its mainnet to a layer-two network. This test involved 0.001 ETH and coordinated state changes on both execution layers.

  • Ethereum mainnet successfully processed the first L1 to L2 atomic transaction of EEZ, with a successful cross-execution layer transfer of 0.001 ETH.
  • EEZ allows rollup to invoke Ethereum contracts within a single transaction, without the need for separate bridging infrastructure.
  • Atomic execution means that the associated L1 and L2 operations must either be completed together, or both must be rolled back completely together.
  • EEZ was built by Gnosis and Zisk with the funding of the Ethereum Foundation, with the goal of reducing the fragmented liquidity between rollup.
  • Gnosis Chain is expected to welcome its first EEZ rollup block as early as around December 2026 or January 2027.

EEZ Contributor Eduardo Antu ña Dí ez stated on October 5th that this transaction represented the framework's first L1 on the Ethereum mainnet. The transaction logs reviewed in subsequent reports indicated that this was a cross-chain call, carrying 0.001 ETH, and was accompanied by a rollup state update.

This test provided the project with its first mainnet example, demonstrating what they call synchronous composability. In simple terms, operations involving Ethereum and EEZ as well as rollup can be packaged together, so that they either all complete or all fail, rather than one part of a multi-step transaction completing while another part fails.

Ethereum EEZ test involves placing L1 and L2 in the same transaction

The design goal of Ethereum Economic Zone is to enable smart contracts on the connected rollup to call contracts on the Ethereum mainnet, receive the results, and then continue to use these results within the same transaction. According to the official project description, this framework is also intended to support calls between EEZ and rollup.

Currently, Ethereum rollup usually operates as independent execution environments. When users transfer assets between different networks or interact with applications, they often rely on bridging transactions, independent liquidity pools, and asynchronous messages between chains.

The design of EEZ changes this process by coordinating operations around Ethereum's own block-making mechanism. ETH remains the source of settlement assets and facts, while the connected rollup is designed to be able to utilize Ethereum contracts and liquidity without requiring users to complete a separate bridging step first.

The latest mainnet tests only used 0.001 ETH, therefore it should be regarded as a technical demonstration, rather than evidence that the system is ready for large-scale financial activities.

Antu describes this transaction as evidence that the atomic synchronization compositability has surpassed theory. His statement specifically refers to the implementation of EEZ and should not be understood as claiming that no other blockchain projects have demonstrated atomic cross-chain execution prior to this.

Atomic execution or removable individual bridging steps

The core protocol of EEZ coordinates the L1 transaction with a special L2 block and submits the associated operations, ensuring that they are both implemented simultaneously in the Ethereum blockchain. If the required conditions are not met, the coordinated execution can be rolled back.

The official documentation for the project describes this method as follows: Applications can access contracts and liquidity across participating environments without the need to maintain separate deployments and bridging integrations for each network. If the complete architecture functions as planned, users will be able to interact with the L1 and L2 applications through a single transaction.

Gnosis, co-founder; Friederike Ernst and Zisk, founders; Jordi Baylina launched Ethereum Economic Zone in March with funding from the Ethereum Foundation. Gnosis and Zisk are founding contributors, while EEZ Association is being established in Switzerland to advance the development of this framework as open-source infrastructure.

As previously reported by crypto.news in EEZ, this project was created in response to the increasingly severe L2 fragmentation issue on Ethereum, with liquidity and applications being dispersed across multiple rollup each possessing their own independent infrastructure.

In the reports on Ethereum rollup fragmentation by crypto.news, cross-network transfers across L2 may require bridging, additional transaction costs, and waiting times, which depend on the specific network and withdrawal method.

The Ethereum mainnet demonstration does not mean that EEZ has been completed.

Although mainnet transactions have been completed, the framework is still under development.

The core protocol code repository made public by this project labels the software as being in an "early stage of implementation" and indicates that it has not yet been audited. Additionally, the interfaces and storage layout may still change. The code repository also describes the system as performing off-chain state calculations first, followed by on-chain verification, in order to achieve atomic calls within a single L1 block.

As shown in the August development updates, its architecture is still undergoing rapid changes. Developers have recently reached an agreement on design issues such as block root commitments, Gas limits, and upgrade paths. At the same time, a major active issue was fixed, and Rollup 0 is being tested on the Chiado test network and an internal devnet.

The core codebase also records technical limitations. At certain execution stages, calls across rollup that currently require related rollup must be verified together in the same batch. The performance of certain proxy operations can also vary depending on the execution chain.

Hydration, co-founder Jakub Gregus, described this mainnet demonstration as "one of the most important milestones in the field of cryptography" and stated that Ethereum could benefit from this technology. His evaluation is from the perspective of an external developer and does not prove how quickly EEZ can reach production scale.

Gnosis Chain may become the first major EEZ rollup

Gnosis Chain is expected to become one of the earliest large-scale tests of this framework.

GnosisDAO approved GIP-153 in August, supporting the conversion of Gnosis Chain from an independent L1 to a EEZ that settles on Ethereum. In the vote, there were 123,158 GNO in favor, 115 against, and 151 abstentions.

The goal of this governance proposal is to initiate the genesis of the new Gnosis EEZ architecture around December 2026 or January 2027. Users will retain their existing addresses, balances, and application states, while Ethereum will ultimately replace the independent validator system of Gnosis Chain to become the settlement layer.

The initial version will not include all the features envisioned in the complete EEZ architecture. GIP-153 indicates that the initial deployment is expected to support atomic calls from L2 to L1 through a transitional proof scheme, while full bidirectional composability and real-time zero-knowledge proofs are planned to be implemented later on.

At launch, Gnosis Ltd is expected to operate a centralized composer responsible for transaction sorting and submitting blocks for verification and Ethereum settlement. The proposal states that the first version will still have additional assumptions of trust until the planned real-time ZK verification system is ready.

According to the approved Gnosis governance proposal, which includes a complete EEZ specification with bidirectional composability, nested cross-chain calls, and real-time ZK proofs, progress is expected to continue throughout 2027.
