The blockchain intelligence platform Arkham reported on platform X that the UTXO model may be the “most underestimated” innovation of Bitcoin’s anonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto. Arkham pointed out that networks such as Litecoin, Doge Coin, and Zcash have adopted this accounting model designed by Satoshi Nakamoto for Bitcoin.

The blockchain intelligence platform Arkham recently published an article on platform X, raising a question: Could Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous founder of Bitcoin, have been most underrated in his innovation with the UTXO model? The article states that although the overall architecture of Bitcoin often receives attention, the accounting system UTXO that enables its operational functionality at the transaction level receives much less attention outside of the tech community.

Arkham wrote in post X, 'Could this be Satoshi Nakamoto's most underrated innovation?' and pointed out that 'Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Zcash all operate using the accounting model that Satoshi Nakamoto designed for Bitcoin.'

Although the UTXO model was first adopted by Bitcoin, it was later also used by several other major blockchains. Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Doge Coin, Zcash, and Dash all retained the UTXO model, and these networks all originated from forks of the Bitcoin codebase. Cardano on the other hand, adopted an improved version known as Extended UTXO (eUTXO), which added programmability for smart contracts while retaining the core accounting structure of UTXO.

UTXO is a method of accounting that does not track available funds based on the total account balance, but rather treats funds as discrete, spendable units. According to the original text, this design is intended to solve the double-spending problem—one of Bitcoin's most core technical challenges. It achieves this by allowing each coin to be traced back to its origin without relying on a centralized authority.

What is Satoshi Nakamoto's most underrated innovation?

Arkham further introduced the UTXO model in a report, as well as the comments that Satoshi Nakamoto made regarding this mechanism.

Arkham indicates that although UTXO is crucial to the Bitcoin architecture, the term “UTXO” does not appear in the Bitcoin white paper released on October 31, 2008. This term was not proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto; rather, it gradually took shape among developers between 2011 and 2012 as an abbreviation for related concepts mentioned in the white paper.

Section 9, “Combining and Splitting Value (Merger and Split of Values),” provides the clearest explanation. According to Satoshi Nakamoto, transactions should not process each coin individually; instead, they should be able to include multiple inputs and outputs simultaneously. One of the outputs is used for payment, while the other returns any change to the sender. The original text states that this accurately describes how UTXO functions in practice.

However, Arkham also points out that Satoshi Nakamoto indirectly mentioned UTXO in Section 7, "Reclaiming Disk Space (Reclaiming Disk Space)".

Zero-date options are holding down the S&P 500, but this cushioning effect might just disappear without a trace.
UBS stated that investors in zero-volatility options buy call options and sell put options when the S&P 500 index falls, and reverse this strategy when it rises, which is limiting the two-way volatility of the index. However, this buffering effect may change during a continuous decline, and the gamma exposure of market makers is also rapidly decreasing, meaning the market may become more sensitive to short-term fluctuations.
