UK-based AI cloud service provider Nscale is reportedly moving forward with its acquisition of Anyscale for approximately $1.65 billion. If the deal goes through, Nscale's business will expand beyond energy, data centers, and orchestration software to include AI workload management and scaling services.
Anyscale was founded by the core team behind the open-source distributed programming framework Ray, initially focusing on helping developers run high-performance computing projects. As the demand for large models increased, the company subsequently shifted its focus to providing extended services for model training, inference, data preparation, and reinforcement learning, while also building development tools, observability, and orchestration capabilities around Ray.
Nscale continues to complete its computing power chain.
This acquisition aligns with Nscale's expansion strategy in recent years. The company aims to keep more of its customers' AI spending within its own system, thus continuously extending upstream and downstream to cover power, data centers, infrastructure software, and workload management layers closer to developers.
In its statement, Anyscale said that once the transaction is completed, the two parties can co-design the software layer and the underlying infrastructure, rather than each optimizing only a single aspect.
The transaction amount exceeded Anyscale's previous valuation.
Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that Nscale acquired Anyscale for $1.65 billion. In comparison, Anyscale was valued at $1.38 billion in its Series C funding round in 2022.
Nscale completed a $2 billion Series C funding round in March of this year, reaching a valuation of $14.6 billion. Its investors include Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell, and the Norwegian industrial group Aker.
- Acquisition price: Approximately US$1.65 billion
- Nscale raised $2 billion in funding this March.
- Nscale's post-funding valuation: $14.6 billion
Anyscale retains its brand and continues to serve its customers.
Nscale stated that Anyscale will retain the existing brand and continue to serve its existing customers after the acquisition. Approximately 200 Anyscale employees will also join Nscale.
In terms of operating performance, Anyscale stated that its revenue in the most recent quarter increased by 70% compared to the previous quarter. This growth rate also indicates that demand for enterprise-level AI software surrounding Ray is still rising.
For Nscale, the significance of this deal lies not only in expanding its customer reach, but also in integrating the software layer of AI computing power delivery into its own system, thereby increasing its integrated service capabilities when competing with large cloud vendors and other AI infrastructure providers.
