Friend recently released a new version, with the core changes being the addition of a speaker and voice capabilities. The company hopes that this wearable device will continue to focus on its "companionship" positioning, rather than being a traditional assistant product.
This update was announced by founder Avi Schiffmann on social media. The new version is called Friend 2.0, and the official promotional video showcases its more natural conversations with users.
Price increased significantly
The new version will retail for $249, a significant increase from its initial price of $99 two years ago. With the price hike, the product's commercialization path is now attracting more attention.
Product positioning remains unclear.
Schiffmann recently stated that he hopes Friend will play the role of "confidant, friend, or even a kind of deity," but he does not define it as an assistant or lover. Questions remain regarding the practical use cases of such AI wearable devices.
Limited industry interest
Friend is not the only company trying this approach. Over the past year, similar AI wearable devices have not truly entered the mainstream market, and Humane's AI Pin ceased operations after poor sales.
